‹From Wu Cheng School to the High School Affiliated to Beijing Normal University›

 

The High School Affiliated to Beijing Normal University(BNU), the former Wu Cheng School, was founded on the 2 November 1901(the twenty-seventh year of Emperor Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty). Wu Cheng School was the first state-owned high school upon the approval of then Chinese government after the founding of the Metropolitan University(predecessor of Beijing University) in 1898.

In 1902, the emperor-made Charter of School(known as Ren Yin educational System) was enacted, which was considered the beginning of Chinese modern educational system. In compliance with that Charter, the Normal Division of the Metropolitan University was set up.

After the Revolution of 1911, the Republic of China was founded and made changes to the former educational system. In May 1912, following the administrative order of the Educational Ministry of the Nanjing interim government, Metropolitan Advanced Normal School(former Normal Division of
the Metropolitan Universit) was changed to the State Beijing Normal College, and in July, the Wu Cheng School was changed as the High School Affiliated to the State Beijing Normal College. The name of "High School Affiliated" has been used from then on.

In 1923, this school was renamed the High School Affiliated to Beijing Normal University.

From its very outset, this school had maintained a close relationshi to the development of new Chinese education, in which it became an important part.

In the 1920s, Lin Liru was dean of the Education Department of Beijing Normal University and princial of this high school as well. With his support ,significant reforms were carried ouit in the school. He once studied at Tokio Normal University. In the few years after 1949, he was president of Beijing Normal University. From 1952 to 1977, he worked as Vice-Minister of Education.

In 1922, the High School Affiliated to BNU took the lead in experimenting the 'Double Three' schooling system.

The High School Affiliated to BNU has a glorious revolutionary tradition. From May 4th Movement to December 9th Movement and from the War of Resistance Against Japan to the War Against US Aggression and aiding Korea, this school's outcry was heard frequently.

‹The High School Affiliated to BNu after 1949›

In 1949, the North China Yu Cai High School Affiliated to BNU, and another three private high schools were taken over. Therefore, the High School Affiliated to BNU had four sections. While this school celebrated the founding of New China, it celebrated the birth of a new school as well. (In 1953, Section 1 and Section 4 were merged and the name of the High School Affiliated to BNU continued to be used; Section 2 became No.101 High School, and Section 3 became the Worker-Peasant High School).

After the founding of New China, Hao Renchu worked as the first principal of this school. On July 24, 1950 on behalf of the whole school Hao Renchu wrote to Chairman Mao Zedong, asking for his inscriptionfor the school's campus journal. Two days later Mao Zedong wrote back and inscripbed the title of the campus journal.

The new school inherited the prestigious tradition in carrying out the education for all-round development. It attached significance to students' political and moral awareness. Over one hundred students gave up their schooling and joined the army to resist the American Aggression and aid Korea. The stories of Wu Yunze, Huang Jiguang and other heroes encouraged students to work hard.

The new school conitinued to make innovations. In 1958, the school began to conduct five-year-consistence experiment and the half-study-and-half-work experiment.

The Culture Revolution starting in 1966 impaired this school. In 1972, this school was remnamed the High School of South Xinhua Street.

‹Development In The New Period›

After the demise of the Cultural Revolution, this school was rejuvenated.

To Make up the time wasted in the Cultural Revolution, this school started to resume and develop its good traditions in school running comprehensively and insisted on all-round education, aiming at cultivating as many talents as possible in the shortest duration. In 1978, this school commenced the experiments of integrated teaching reforms.

In 1981, this school celebrated its eightieth anniversary. After 1985 this school put its emphases on developing students' intelligence and various skills. It entered a new period of educational exploration and development.

Entering the 1990s, this school has done in its best efforts to explore new approaches in carrying out education oriented to all-round development and tried to take the lead in this aspect. In this period,the Science-Technology-Society(STS) experiment was conducted. Regarding the management of teaching quality, five-combination thought is raised, i.e. to find an optimum point where five aspects concerned can be combined perfectly. The five aspects are teachers' role in instruction and students' principal role in learning, basic knowledge and intelligence enhancement, teaching and cultivation, theory and practice,and traditional and modern teaching approaches.
